Karen Waldrup
July 22, 2011
Karen Waldrup is one of the newest and freshest voices on the country scene.
You may recognize this 24-year-old from Bravo's show "Platinum Hits" which featured twelve up-and-coming song writers going through song writing challenges and more. It is hosted by Jewel and has Kara DioGuardi as a judge. If you missed
"Platinum Hits", she's definitely someone you will want to know soon, she's extremely talented and sweet and that's just the beginning!
While she's originally from Mandeville, LA, she moved to Nashville, TN in
order to pursue her musical dreams. She enjoys Nashville because "everyone in
Nashville shares my interests." Though, she didn't move before she graduated
from University of Southern Mississippi, where she went on a vocal
scholarship.
In 2008, Karen was named one of GAC's Top 25 songwriters! While in 2009, she
landed a gig opening for Rodney Atkins at the "Salute to the Troops" concert at
Fort Campbell (which also featured Carrie Underwood, Hank Williams Jr, and Jake
Owen!)
In 2011, she released her self-titled independent album (available on her
official webpage: http://www.karenwaldrup.com) although that isn't her first
album!
She's performed at many different venues all over the state of Louisiana as
well as different festivals all over the country.
Karen plays the guitar as well as the harmonica besides singing. She also
enjoys fruit snacks (according to her facebook page) and she is opening for
fellow Team True Beauty supporter, Sara Evans, in a matter of weeks!
It's an extreme honor to have Karen interested in Team True Beauty, and her
answers to our spotlight questions exemplify the passion she has for others! She
even wrote a poem specifically for Team True Beauty, and it's nothing short of
beautiful. In the words of one of our co-founders, Meriam, "I'm really glad we
have this, I think everyone will really love her inspiring messages!"
TTB: Why did you decide to join Team True Beauty?
Karen: I decided to be a part of Team True Beauty because there are so many
people out there that are truly confused on what defines beauty. They think if
they get a tan or wear some nice clothes that people will think they are
beautiful. I think my inner beauty is most radiant right after being a part of
a charitable event, giving back to the world or simply loving people and
treating them right. Giving back just makes you feel on fire, able to do
anything, and sexy!
TTB: What is one piece of advice you would give to people who are struggling
to see THEIR true beauty?
Karen: If you're struggling with your true beauty, I challenge you to take a
Saturday and go sit in a nursing home and talk to some old folks. It will not
cost you anything. They'll love your presence so much just being around them
and the entire time you can sit and admire the beauty that comes from deep
within them. These people don't wear make up and the robe they are wearing is
one of five options for outfits. We'll all be there one day and you'll feel so
fulfilled when you leave! Share the story with me and I will tweet it to the
fans!
TTB: How do YOU describe Beauty? True Beauty? Is there a difference?
Karen: To me, beauty is the light that shines from someones eyes or the
happiness in their laugh. True beauty is combining the energy of the laugh with
the ability to give back to the world. What is your purpose? If someone can
define how they can help the world, they will establish a true beauty within
them by doing it.
TTB: What is one thing that your fans/followers/TTB supporters would be
surprised to find out about you?
Karen: One thing everyone would be surprised to know about me is that my
grandmother had 18 children! One husband...1 set of twins...17 births! I have
a huge New Orleans family!
TTB: If there is ONE thing that you can leave this spotlight with, concerning
ANYTHING (funny or serious) what would it be?
Karen: I have known women who have struggled with image issues. Whether they
were struggling with eating disorders or Body Dysmorphic Disorder, I noticed one
thing that is standard about them. They are beautiful...they just can't see it
because of illness. Sometimes it is random and can affect anyone. All we can
do is build them up and encourage them to talk to someone, get active in the
community, and give back. This is all I know to do because giving through music
is all I've ever known how to do. Find YOUR thing!
This is our time to change the way the world sees beauty!
PLEASE enjoy this WONDERFUL poem by Karen, written with all of YOU in mind,
and cherish the words!
I know a Lady
I know a lady as pretty as a pearl
When she walks in the room everyone notices this cover girl
She's tall and she's thin, but the truth is within
She has no idea how beautiful she really is
When she looks in the mirror she sees something that's false
I wish she woke up to no mirror at all
Instead she could search herself to find what's true
Cause the part I love most is her heart and smile too
But somewhere along the way she got confused
Someone led her to believe beauty is infused
Let's tell the world that beauty is not Vanity Fair
We can all be filled with loveliness if it's love that we share
It's the overweight woman working on Christmas at Waffle House late
Keeping a smile on her face knowing her purpose is great
That she has the power to give back to family, God and community with
grace
Cause beauty is so much more than a dolled up face.
