Michael "MyKell" Barlow
July 18, 2011
“Michael Barlow is a third generation child of music from Atlanta, GA. Music is his passion. He was born from music. He was born for music. He has spent his entire life on stages from church, to talent shows, musical theatre, fashion runways, from Atlanta to Bangkok, and now on the biggest stage of his life as a burgeoning recording artist. With a soulful blend of pop/rock and r&b he is created to shine. His sound is not what you'd expect but he is crafted to bring something NEW, DIFFERENT, and POWERFUL to the music industry. He can’t be what you want him to be. He can only be who he is. He is a singer and a lyricist. Staring destiny in the face and ‘Dreaming Clear’. He is Mykell” -ReverbNation
One of the biggest differences in this celebrity spotlight in comparison to our others is that I have known Michael since before he was a celebrity. He is a very good and very dear friend of mine, and is rather more like a brother to me than just a friend. I have known him for over 4 years now and he is one of the most genuine, sweet, and humble people I have ever met. He is also extremely talented and is moving to Los Angeles this fall to further his music and acting career. He placed second in the International YOBISing Competition and as a result will be starring alongside Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino this September in a show called Random Talent. Michael covered “Who I Am” by Nick Jonas and along with Justin Patten, fellow TTB supporter, produced a video in support of Team True Beauty and all the work we are doing. So without further adieu, I present one of my dear friends, and huge Team True Beauty supporter and advocate, Michael “Mykell” Barlow!
TTB: Why did you decide to join Team True Beauty?
MyKell: When I heard about Team True Beauty I knew I had to be a part. Not only because one of my dear friends was a cofounder but because I believe we live in a world that has been consumed by a false sense of beauty. It has replaced true self worth and prevents people from realizing their real potential as beautiful unique individuals. I have younger sisters who fight everyday to discover what makes them beautiful despite the barrage of words and images that are our cultures attempt to falsely define beauty. I too, wrestle with the temptation to dress and look a certain way so perhaps other people may see me as attractive and it is draining and ultimately pointless. To have the opportunity to be a voice that says "there is beauty in you, find it, hold it high, and never be ashamed of YOUR inherit beauty" is an overwhelming privilege. I love what TTB stands for.
TTB: What is one piece of advice you would give to people who are struggling to see THEIR true beauty?
MyKell: I would encourage everyone to really grasp the truth that there is beauty inside all of us. Whether you are looking in a mirror or taking a glance into your heart and soul, there is beauty to be found there. Search for YOUR beauty and when you find it, HOLD IT HIGH!! Be beautiful for yourself. Be so convinced of your unique beauty that everyone around you can’t help but be convinced as well.
TTB: How do YOU describe Beauty? True Beauty? Is there a difference?
MyKell: To me, confidence and beauty are interchangeable. We like to think that a certain style or look is what makes beauty, but if you think about it those styles and looks are only considered beautiful because someone had the confidence to make it work. We have got to stop letting other people define beauty for us and define beauty for ourselves!
TTB: What is one thing that your fans/followers/TTB supporters would be surprised to find out about you?
MyKell: I was a runway model for several years. In fact, a lot of my ideas about beauty came from my time as a model. People may think that fashion models are the epitome of beauty but ironically models have some of the hardest times seeing themselves as beautiful.
TTB: If there is ONE thing that you can leave this spotlight with, concerning ANYTHING (funny or serious) what would it be?
MyKell: We live our lives with the notion that everywhere we go people are looking at us totally concerned about our appearance, judging us by invisible standards, but the truth is everyone around you is so obsessed with how you perceive them that they aren’t concerned at all with YOUR appearance so just be YOU! The you that is happy and comfortable in your own skin.
Thank you for this opportunity.
